The Hangover III: A Fangirl Review
The Wolfpack is back for a final trip of
mayhem in the Hangover III. I loved the
first movie. It was a nice approach to a buddy comedy that I hadn’t seen before,
and I thought it worked really well. The
then virtually unknown stars Bradley Copper, Ed Helms and Zack Galafinakis were
hilarious in their respective roles and grounded their characters just enough
to make the outrageous situations they were put in somewhat believable.
Same goes for The Hangover II. I’ll admit when I first watched it I wasn’t
completely sold on it. I thought, why
are we telling the same story again only in Bangkok, not Las Vegas. But after several re-watches, thanks to HBO,
I found myself loving it, maybe even more than the original. The formula doesn’t work against it as I
first thought; it’s what makes the movie better than just a typical buddy comedy
movie. That being said, here lies the
problem with The Hangover III. I think
there was so much backlash against the second one following the same formula
that Director Todd Philips went out of his way to not do it again in Hangover
III, and the movie just isn’t as much fun because of it.
Not having a mysterious night to solve
makes for a dull movie that not even Mr. Chow can save. All the way through the movie, I kept waiting
for there to be some drug induced memory loss, but no such luck. Trying to change Allen’s character is a big
mistake. He will always be a child
trapped in a man’s body, and I love him for it and deep down so do Phil and Stu. There are hundreds of ways they could have
ended this trilogy, but the way they picked left me feeling flat and
unsatisfied. My favorite scene of the
movie was the last one before the credits! I won’t give it away, but at least
it gave me a smile and a hearty laugh, something the movie failed to do in the
first hour and thirty-five minutes.
